  • PC-BSD is based on FreeBSD.
  • NOT WORKING FOR ME WITH PC-BSD 9.0 AND VIRTUALBOX 4.1.16: Installation from the Live-DVD under VirtualBox: Either click on the install icon using the Gnome desktop, or, if using KDE, go to /root/Desktop and run the installer (installpcbsd.desktop). However it produced an irrecoverable error at the last moment of the installation. The machine cannot be booted again.
  • WORKED: Downloaded and used the PC-BSD .vdi VirtualBox image.
  • Change Keyboard Layout: system Settings / Hardware / Input Devices / Keyboard / Layouts / Add (select the desired layout).
  • Install Java: Using AppCafe, search for "jdk", install.
  • /opt does not exist.
  • Shells under FreeBSD: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/shells.html
    • Change default shell, e.g. to bash: chsh -s /usr/local/bin/bash
  • Change shell to bash: run the command "bash" in a terminal.
  • "ps aux | grep name" does not work in a normal bash terminal like linux; it only returns the characters that ps aux displays on the window. Alternative: "ps auwwx | grep name". See http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=28008
